GE and CRRC delivered 182 locomotives to Transnet

transnet locoUnder Transnet’s locomotive acquisition programme, 182 vehicles have been delivered by General Electric and CSR who are both based at the Transnet Engineering’s manufacturing facility in Pretoria.
According to Transnet, Bombardier and CNR, who are based in Durban, have both not yet begun production in South Africa. Transnet is in the final stages of readying manufacturing facilities in Durban.
In terms of the contract, the first few units would be produced at the manufacturers’ facilities across the world, barring Bombardier who will manufacture all its units in South Africa.
In this regard, CRRC has delivered two prototype locomotives for testing in South African conditions. In terms of the contract, the Chinese company would manufacture the first 20 locomotives at its facility in China while the balance will be assembled at the Transnet Manufacturing facility in Durban.
The company’s programme involves the acquisition of 1064 diesel and electric locomotives. Transnet signed a contract with Bombardier and with China South Rail Zhuzhou Electric for 599 electric locomotives, and for 465 diesel locomotives Transnet signed an agreement with General Electric and China North Rail Rolling Stock.
The USD 4.2 billion was split into two major contracts: with General Electric South Africa Technologies and CNR Rolling Stock South Africa, to supply 233 and 232 diesel locomotives respectively, and CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive and Bombardier Transportation South Africa to supply 359 and 240 electric locomotives respectively.
