GBP 2.9 million improvement project for Hillington West station

Network Rail is set to commence a GBP 2.9 million improvement project to renew both platforms at Hillington West station, located on the busy Glasgow–Paisley railway line.

The works will involve demolishing and rebuilding both Hillington West station platforms (190-metre-long), which have reached the end of their operational life. The project will include new surfacing and drainage improvements to enhance passenger safety and accessibility.

The project will begin on Sunday, 16 February, with Platform 1 closing for just over three months. It is scheduled to reopen on 18 May, at which point work will commence on Platform 2. The second phase of the project will run from 18 May to 17 August.

During this period, passengers are advised to use the nearby Hillington East station as an alternative.

“This vital work to renew worn-out infrastructure that’s reached the end of its life will help us to run a safe and reliable railway. We know there’s never a good time to close a station platform, and we’re grateful to passengers and our neighbours for their patience while this vital improvement work takes place,” Ashley McDonald, Scheme Project Manager for Network Rail Scotland, said..

The station footbridge will remain open during the day, though some overnight closures will be required to ensure engineers can work safely.

This project is part of Network Rail’s broader infrastructure improvement programme. A separate GBP 1.75 million scheme to rebuild Platform 1 at Alexandra Parade station is already underway. This work includes the installation of new lighting and CCTV and is expected to be completed by May 2025.
