FRA launched competitive grant funding for PTC implementation

amtrakThe US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced a USD 25 million competitive grant funding available to railways for the implementation of positive train control (PTC).
Applications will be accepted until May 19 and FRA will give preference to projects that would provide the greatest level of public safety benefits.
As part of the President’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget proposal, FRA requested USD 1.25 billion to assist commuter and short line railway companies with implementing PTC.
Last October, Congress extended the original deadline from December 31, 2015 to at least December 31, 2018.
PTC is required to be installed and implemented on Class I railroad main lines over which any poisonous- or toxic-by-inhalation hazardous materials are transported; and, on any main lines over which regularly scheduled passenger intercity or commuter operations are conducted.  It is currently estimated this will equate to approximately 112,654 km of track and will involve approximately 20,000 locomotives.
