Presidential opening for Manila LRT-1 Cavite extension

Manila LRT-1 Cavite extension

The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has officially inaugurated Manila LRT-1 Cavite extension on November 15, 2024, at the LRT-1 Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat) station in Paranaque City. The event was also attended by officials from the Department of Transport and representatives of Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).

“By serving commuters across Metro Manila, Cavite, neighboring areas, the whole project creates a smoother, more reliable mode of transport. Our journey towards a more seamless and modernised public transport system does not end here. We are committed to building station after station, reaching as far and as fast as our people’s mobility needs,” the President of the Philippines said at the official inauguration.

Starting November 16, 2024, the extension entered commercial operation along the phase 1 route from Redemptorist – Aseana station to Dr. Santos station.

Manila LRT-1 Cavite extension adds 6.2 km and five new stations to the existing line now totalling 27 km crossing five cities: Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, and Paranaque. The Cavite extension is designed to ultimately reduce the travel time between Baclaran, Pasay City and Bacoor, Cavite, from one hour and 10 minutes to just 25 minutes.

“We are excited to announce that we have finally opened the Manila LRT-1 Cavite extension phase 1 to the public. This milestone marks a significant step in improving Metro Manila’s transport system and providing our commuters with a more convenient and efficient travel experience. We are committed to continuously enhancing our services and delivering world-class public transportation,” LRMC CEO, Enrico R. Benipayo, said.

All stations have been designed with accessibility in mind, featuring elevators, escalators, and tactile guides to cater to the needs of persons with special needs in keeping with LRMC’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive transportation environment for all passengers.

The LRT-1 extension is a significant Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity to the south area of Metro Manila, easing traffic congestion and providing commuters with a faster and more convenient travel option. It will not only reduce travel time, but will also decongest major thoroughfares in the area by servicing additional 80,000 passengers to LRT-1’s daily ridership of 323,000.

The project has been undertaken by a consortium led by Bouygues Travaux Publics including Alstom.

Alstom delivered complete project engineering and integration of the electromechanical railway system, the delivery of modern signalling systems (with ETCS Level 1 standard), advanced telecommunications, track works, power supply and overhead catenary systems. In 2022, Alstom completed the upgrade of the existing 20-km LRT-1 trackside signalling system with its Atlas 100 solution, enhancing operational efficiency and safety across the network. Alstom also equipped the entire fleet of 60 trains, comprising four generations of rolling stock, with new onboard signalling equipment.

This year, an agreement was signed for the operation and maintenance of the LRT-1 line, which provides public transport connection in Metro Manila.
