Five international companies have submitted applications until 15 March, the last date for placing pre-qualification bids in the tender for 200 electric locomotives launched by the Indian Railways. The locomotives will be used for heavy haulage on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dadri to Mumbai.
The value of the contract is estimated at Rs 50 billion (EUR 621 million). The five bidders are Siemens, Bombardier, Alstom, BHEL-EMD and Toshiba-CRRC.
The Indian Railways seek to acquire 200 electric locomotives of 9,000 HP to haul double-stack containers on the future 1,534 km long Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. According to the tender conditions, the selected manufacturer will import only 10 locomotives, while the remaining 190 locomotives will be produced at the Indian Railways’ Chittaranjan Locomotive Works facility in Asansol, with transfer of technology. The company will also set up a maintenance depot at Rewari.
The companies will have to submit their price offer by the end of April and the contract is expected to be awarded by December this year.
