First new TMH metro train to St. Petersburg delivered

Balt metro train Transmashholding delivered St. Petersburg the first Balt metro train manufactured at the Oktyabrsky Electric Railcar Repair Plant (OEVRZ) located in Saint Petersburg. The handover ceremony was held at Avtovo Electric Depot, attended by the Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Albert Karimov, Vice-Governor of Saint Petersburg Kirill Poliakov, Head of Metro Evegeniy Kozin, TMH Deputy CEOs Andrey Vasiliev and Artyom Ledenev, as well as CEO of OEVRZ Andrey Stepnov.

The train will join the fleet operating Line 1 (Red Line). The train will undergo trials without passengers until it will be permitted to start commercial operations in November. Under the contract signed with St. Petersburg metro, TMH will deliver eight 8-car trains by the end of this year.

The train is built on the basis of a flat-sided body with 1400mm-wide sliding plug doors. It is moved by a new Russian-made asynchronous traction drive, which allows electrodynamic braking until the full stop and autonomous movement up to 200 metres. The driver cab uses a new control board, developed with the participation of the Metro Rolling Stock Division, and has an air-disinfecting ventilation system. The cabs are equipped with compact evacuation ramps and the rearview mirrors are built-in extra surveillance cameras (video-mirrors). The front of the train features the Saint Petersburg Metro Logo with backlight. The windshield is covered with a protective film. The design of the LED headlights is exclusive to Saint Petersburg.

The doorways are equipped with LED strips that warn passengers of the doors closing or opening. For the first time for Saint Petersburg, the above-door information panels are LCD displays also be mounted on the ceilings.

The seating arrangement is made of separate seats with backrests and vinyl upholstery with a drawbridge pattern, tailormade for Saint Petersburg. The train provides accessibility areas for accommodating and assisting passengers with reduced mobility.

The new Balt metro train was developed by TMH Engineering and meets all technical requirements of Saint Petersburg metro system with a 90% Russian-made content of the train manufacturing process. Its exterior outlook was created with the participation of the National Centre of Design and Innovations 2050.LAB.
In August 2022, Transholdleasing signed a contract to supply as a lease 950 metro cars funded by VEB.RF through the National Wealth Fund. TMH will build 8-and 6-car trains. They will  consist of three variations of carriages – end (head), intermediate motorised, and intermediate non-motorised.
RUB 242.6 billion (EUR 4.18 billion) is the value of the contract including leasing interest. Under a 25-year framework agreement, the shipments are scheduled between 2022 and 2031.
