Finland to open up rail passenger market to competition

VRFinland’s Transport Minister Anne Berner said that VR’s monopoly on Finnish rail passenger market will end and she intends to open up transport services to competition, Yle.fi reports.
“Opening up (rail traffic) for competition means that VR is giving up its monopoly and other players can enter the field. This is not about privatising VR and the state is not giving up ownership,” said Berner in a press release.
The ministry’s goal is to set in motion the process for opening up rail passneger market to competition during spring 2016. Currently, VR has an exclusive agreement on passenger transpport in Finland through to the end of 2024.
