VR Finland awarded Hitachi Rail STS a contract to install on-board ERTMS systems for 60 locomotives, with options for further deliveries up to 2030, which are being delivered to the Finnish operator by Stadler Rail Valencia.
Under the contract, Hitachi will provide both ERTMS Baseline 3.6 and the Finnish STM (STM-JKV). Hitachi Rail’s solution to be deployed aboard the new fleet will contribute to increasing the interoperability and availability of the trains, ensuring high quality services for operator and end-users.
“Over the last few years, we have experienced an unprecedented increase in the Nordic ERTMS on-board market, both for the upgrade of existing fleets and equipping brand new trains,” Eric Morand, Hitachi Rail’s VP for the Nordics Region said.
In 2019, VR Group and Stadler Rail Valencia signed a contract for the supply of 60 diesel-electric locomotives, valuated at EUR 200 million. The contract includes options for 100 additional locomotives. The first five vehicles will enter services in 2022, with the remaining batch of locomotives expected to be delivered by the end od 2025.
The locomotives are to be fitted with radio control equipment and ETCS Baseline 3, with the local STM ATP safety system and the latest generation of vehicle control system including remote diagnosis features.
