Financing contracts for Bucharest metro expansion signed

Bucharest metro expansionRomania’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and Metrorex have signed two financing contracts for Bucharest metro expansion including two sections totalling 18.6 km and 20 stations.

The first financing contract concerns the first section of metro line M6, supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This first section is 6.6 km long with 6 stations between the existing 1 Mai station (on M4 line) and the future Tokyo station.

RON 1.47 billion (EUR 291.5 million) is the value of the PNRR funding for the project.

The investment objective financed by PNRR aims at carrying out resistance structure works – stations, interstices, tunnels, galleries and other constructions, representing the civil construction works, for the new metro section between the 1 Mai station and the Tokyo station.

Besides the existing station (1 Mai), the new stations are Pajura, Exhibition, Montreal Plaza, Baneasa station, Baneasa Airport station and Tokyo station.

The first section is expected to be completed in 2026 and is part of the south section of the future Bucharest metro M6 line which will be constructed into two phases providing connection between M4 and the Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.

The second section will have 7.6 km and 6 stations between Tokyo and the airport and is expected to be completed in 2027. The line will be operated by 12 metro trains.

In 2022, Metrorex awarded the consortium of lsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri and Makyol Insaat Sanayi Turizm the contract for the construction of 1 Mai – Tokyo metro section of M6 line.

The entire underground M6 line will be 14.2 km long with 12 stations and has a value of RON 9.3 billion (EUR 1.85 billion), of which EUR 291.5 million is covered by the European Union through PNRR.

The remaining sum of the investment will be covered by other financing resources, the Ministry of Transport says.

Bucharest metro expansion – M4 line

The second financing contract was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as the Management Authority of Transport Operational Programme 2021-2027, Metrorex and the 4th District City Hall for the project “Bucharest metro expansion – M4 line between Gara de Nord (Bucharest North railway station) and Gara Progresul (Progresul station)”.

“On June 27, we are waiting for bids submission and in the next four months we expect to announce the winner of the design contract. We are waiting to launch the construction works and to put into operation the new metro line in Bucharest. M4 line extension will balance the cohesion because there are differences in development between the northern and southern parts of Bucharest. This project, together with the future airport [the Bucharest South Airport] will contribute to the removal of the development barrier the 4th District of Bucharest is currently facing. The metro extension will solve traffic problems in the district and will reduce transport emissions,” the Mayor of 4th District City Hall, Daniel Băluță, said

The project involves the construction of a 11.9 km extension of the M4 line with 14 stations linking  the centre of Bucharest and its south part. The extension will cross through three districts providing connections to residential, commercial and industrial areas, health and cultural facilities, as well as entertainment areas.

The section is expected to be completed in 2029 ensuring an intermodal direct connection between two transport hubs (Bucharest North station and Progresul station).

RON 13 billion (EUR 2.6 billion) is the value of the entire project, of which RON 9.2 billion (EUR 1.8 billion) is covered by the EU through the Cohesion Fund, RON 1.6 billion (EUR 319.5 million) from state budget, RON 21.3 million (EUR 4.2 million) is the co-financing of the beneficiary while RON 2 billion (EUR 413.7 million) is the non-eligible value of the project.

The two projects will increase the accessibility to the city’s metro network and will develop and improve sustainable mobility in the city, helping economic and social development.

The extensions of the metro system will deliver fast public transport services and opportunity for business development across the alignment of the corridors.
