Metro Warszawskie, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the ING bank signed a PLN 392.5 million (EUR 87.2 million) loan agreement which will finance the Warsaw metro train fleet procurement.
“While investing in quality of life and social policy, we do not neglect investments in the city’s infrastructure and environment. The extension of the metro network is a key task for the City of Warsaw that will bring many benefits. Citizens will gain a fast and comfortable means of transport, and it will have an enormous positive impact on the environment, which is a priority for us,” Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw said.
The loan will support the procurement of 45 six-car metro trains from Škoda. They will operate on the extended metro Line 2 which is currently under construction and will partially replace the old rolling stock operating on Line 1. With daily traffic expected to reach 200,000 passengers, the new metro line will connect the city centre with residential and commercial areas that host over 40 per cent of Warsaw’s population.
“With this transaction we welcome Warsaw’s commitment to investing in modern public transport infrastructure while developing a comprehensive plan to improve its overall urban environment,” Grzegorz Zieliński, EBRD Regional Director, Head of Central Europe and the Baltic States said.
“ING’s participation in the syndicated loan for Warsaw metro also proves our strong footprint in the area on the local government market,” Marcin Kościński, Executive Director at ING Bank Śląski.
In January, Metro Warszawskie and Škoda Transportation – Škoda Vagonka consortium signed a CZK 8 billion (EUR 305.47 million) contract to renew Warsaw metro train fleet. The firm order involves the delivery of 37 new metro trains. The contract includes an option for 8 additional metro trains. The first vehicle is expected to enter operation next year while the delivery of the remaining vehicles must be completed within 4 and a half years from the contract signing.
The new trains will be 118.2-metre-long and will have a capacity of 1,500 passengers. The trains will be able to run on Warsaw metro network with speeds of 90 km/h.
