Feasibility study completed for Greece-Bulgaria rail project

A feasibility study for the project of a rail line connecting six ports in northern Greece and Bulgaria (the Sea2Sea initiative) has been finalized and is positive. The cost of connecting, by rail, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Alexandroupolis, Burgas, Varna and Ruse has been estimated at EUR 3.7 billion. Most of the project will be implemented on the Greek side, including a new rail line connecting the port city of Thessaloniki with the border city of Xanthi.
The next step is the establishment of a bi-national company to implement the project. The project is due to be presented to EU Commissioner Violeta Bulc over the coming period. The memorandum of understanding for the construction of the railway line was signed by the two countries on 6 September 2017.
