The Municipality of Cluj-Napoca and the consortium of SWS Engineering, Systra and Metrans Engineering signed the contracts for feasibility studies for the development of Cluj-Napoca metro and suburban train project. EUR 7.43 million is the total value of the contracts.
“The feasibility studies for Cluj metro and metropolitan train projects are the most important infrastructure projects in city’s history. This integrated project will significantly develop city’s metropolitan area and will attract new investments,” the Mayor Emil Boc said.
Under the two contracts, the consortium will deliver the metro feasibility study within the next 26 months, and for the metropolitan train, in 14 months.
The suburban train service is the first component of the project. It will use the existing railway infrastructure and will integrate the Cluj – Episcopia Bihor railway line which will be modernised. Under this phase, the city’s authorities will develop a 100-km area from Huedin to Dej, which will be served by the new suburban transport network offering seamless passenger services and new mobility options and will open investment opportunities.
The so-called Metropolitan Train project will cover the entire 43-km railway line between Nădășel and Bonțida stops. The project includes the modernisation of the existing stops and he construction of new stops in Baciu, Tetarom I and pod IRA areas. At each stop ticketing systems will be installed, and Park & Ride concept will be developed.
The metro system proposes a 16 km rapid transit corridor on west-east axis which also has a surface option between Gilău and Florești. It will be developed within two phases. The first one will offer the transport links from Florești situated in the western area of the city, serving the future regional hospital, Vivo new commercial and Mănăștur areas, crossing the Cluj-Napoca city centre to the eastern part of the city, in Aurel Vlaicu /Pod IRA area.
Under the second phase, the metro project will provide the transport connection between Florești and Gilău commune, which is important for the metropolitan area. A priority project is considered for the provision of bus transport services between Gilău and the metro and metropolitan train terminus stations (Florești and Nădășel respectively). The new bus services will feed the stations across the metropolitan rapid transport system.
Both Cluj-Napoca metro and suburban train projects will develop city’s economy and will improve the overall quality of life for the residents.
