European Railway Station Index: the most unfriendly railway stations are in Germany

The recent European Railway Station Index reveals that the five most unfriendly stations for passengers are all in Germany. 

most unfriendly railway stationsAccording to the study, the top five most unfriendly train stations are the German stations Essen, Berlin Ostkreuz, Berlin Zoologischer Garten, München-Pasing and Bremen, which offer the least comfort for passengers. The reason is delays and long waiting times.

On the other hand, according to the European Railway Station Index, the main railway station in Zurich, Switzerland, ranks first in Europe’s best stations with 102 points, ahead of the main station in Vienna with 94 points.

Zurich performs well for reduced waiting times, the most favourable ticket office opening hours, easy access to entrances, platforms and toilets for wheelchair users, but also for the number of first-class shops, kiosks, restaurants and lounges, better Wi-Fi coverage and connections to and from the station. More than 154 million passengers pass through Zurich station every year. According to the study, Bern is in third place, alongside Berlin Hauptbahnhof, both with 90 points.

Utrecht Centraal in the Netherlands is in fifth place, with a total of 89.5 points. It is the largest station in the Netherlands in terms of size, with 21 tracks, and is the busiest, with more than 285,000 passengers a day. Sixth place, with 87 points, is Frankfurt station, Germany, with over 164 million passengers per year. This is the second busiest German station after Hamburg. In seventh place, with 86 points, is Napoli Centrale, with around 137,000 daily visitors and 50 million a year, with 390 trains passing through the station daily.
