European railway companies: Rail transport is the most sustainable

This is the conclusion of a study elaborated by CE Delft, a Dutch research organisation. The study has been carried out for DG MOVE – the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission.

Railway transport is the most sustainable transport mode in Europe, this is the conclusion of CE Delft researchers, a Dutch independent research organisation. This is also the conclusion of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER). European governments should rebalance the railway transport policy, CER officials say.

At DG MOVE’s request, CE Delft has elaborated the study called “Sustainable transport. The internalisation of transport external costs”. The conclusion of the research is that the European railway sector is more in conformity with the “user pays” and “polluter pays” principles than any other transport mode.

“The study is a call to governments to rebalance transport shares to transport modes such as railway transport. Climate action is a priority for the citizens as the recent elections (EU Parliamentary elections) showed and the European railways are ready for a greater role in transport”, declared CER’s Executive Director, Libor Lochman.

The railway sector will become more cost-competitive due to the harmonisation of equipment standards, digitalisation and automation, he said. “Taking advantage of this fact, the decision factors should make a priority of railway development, so that more people and goods could move sustainably”, explained Libor Lochman.
