Attiko Metro and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have concluded on a EUR 580 million funding for the construction of Alsos Veikou – Goudi metro section which is the first one on the future Athens Metro Line 4. This agreement represents both the largest EIB support for a new transport project in the country and for a single project in Greece.
This is the second part of the EUR 730 million total in financing being provided by the EIB for the project.
“The implementation of Attiko Metro projects would not have been possible if they had not been integrated into the financing programmes of the European Union and if the European Investment Bank had not provided its support and decisive contribution from the beginning of the metro projects construction in Athens and Thessaloniki until the present date,” Attiko Metro CEO Nikos Kouretas, said.
The 30-year loan will be used for the construction of Alsos Veikou – Goudi line (Section A) which will have a length of 12.8 km with 15 stations of which 9 are interchange stations. The project includes the connecting tunnel of Line 4 with Lines 2 and 3, as well as the access tunnel to the train stabling and maintenance yard at Katehaki. In June 2021, a EUR 1.2 billion contract was signed for the construction of the first section which will serve densely populated areas of the city, as well as a number of important buildings and facilities, such as hospitals, educational institutions, court houses and premises of public organisations or ministries.
EUR 1.5 billion is the value of the project which is expected to be completed in approximately 8 years.
Alsos Veikou – Goudi metro section is one of the five Athens Metro Line 4 sections covering a 38.2 km U-shape line with 35 stations. The future line will provide metro transport services from Alsos Veikou and Evangelismos to Faros and Maroussi and together with its extensions it will be further connected to Vyronas/Ano Ilioupoli and Petroupoli and the National Road.
This latest support follows the first loan agreement in 2019, when Attiko Metro agreed support from the EIB against the amount of EUR 150 million out of the overall approved credit which was disbursed in November 2021.
Currently, the two metro lines in Athens have a total length of 43 km and accommodate 40 modern stations including the 3 new stations of Line 3 connecting the Port of Piraeus and Athens International Airport expected to be opened this summer. The metro system serves approximately 1 million passengers daily.
