The European Commission has approved EUR 293 million from the Cohesion Fund for five major projects to improve sustainable transport services in the biggest Polish metropoles Warsaw, Łódź, Szczecin and Poznań. These investments aim to modernise the public transport systems in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way and will provide commuters and visitors with improved travel conditions, higher comfort and shorter journey times. They are all financed under the Polish operational programme “Infrastructure and Environment” under the same priority “Environment-friendly transport” and are expected to be finalised by the end of 2015.
Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu who approved the investments, said “I welcome the adoption of these projects, which contributes to improving the mobility of the Polish citizens, ensuring safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly travel conditions. Infrastructure development projects in the biggest Polish cities Warsaw, Łódź, Szczecin and Poznań will boost competitiveness and strengthen the economy in the whole country.”
The project “Purchase of low-floor trams for the public transport in Warsaw” involves the purchase of 85 new trams adapted for the elderly and the disabled. With this investment, 1.8 million more people will be served by the upgraded urban transport system in 2016. The European Union, through the CF, will finance EUR 91.7 million out of the total investment of EUR 141 million.
The project “Purchase of 20 new double-deck intermediate coaches, 2 new control coaches and 2 new locomotives for the push-pull rolling stock” involves the purchase of 20 double-deck intermediate coaches, 2 double-deck control coaches and 2 electric locomotives to be operated on the busiest sections of railway lines in the Warsaw metropolitan area for higher comfort and better safety. The European Union, through the CF, will finance EUR 41 million out of the total investment of EUR 51.3 million.
The project “Multimodal Hub at Łódź Fabryczna Railway Station” involves the construction and upgrade of tram lines and tram stops and the creation of a hub for tram, train and car at the Łódź Fabryczna railway station with a Park & Ride car parking systems and a system of ramps and access roads to the hub. The European Union, through the CF, will finance EUR 85.8 million out of the total investment of EUR 110.8 million.
The project “Construction and reconstruction of tram infrastructure in Szczecin“, involves the modernisation of sections of the tram track in Western districts of Szczecin and the refurbishment of the Pogodno depot in order to adapt it to the requirements of low-floor rolling stock. The European Union, through the CF, will finance EUR 41.7 million out of the total investment of EUR 52.2 million.
The project “Renewal of the public transport infrastructure in Poznań – Phase I and Phase II” involves the modernisation of 5.31 km of the tram and trolleybus network along Grunwaldzka street and along lines linking the stadium to the city centre, to the railway station and to the airport. The project has been operational since spring 2012 and was implemented in connection with the organisation of the EURO 2012 Football Cup. The European Union, through the CF, will finance EUR 33.2 million out of the total investment of EUR 52.3 million.
