Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (Mitma), through Adif, has awarded a EUR 119.6 million contracts to adapt the clearances of 19 tunnels and 45 overpasses on the Zaragoza – Sagunto line to advance the electrification of this conventional line.
The project along Zaragoza – Teruel – Sagunto line consists of adapting the dimensions of the overpasses and the section of the tunnels to install the poles, the catenary and the rest of the electrification installations.
31 of the 45 overpasses will be completely renovated, 7, currently unutilised, will be dismantled, restoring the surroundings, and the last 7 will be adapted and work will be done on lowering the level, ripping of the track and modifying its structures. 22 of the overpasses are located on the Sagunto-Teruel section and 23 between Zaragoza and Teruel.
The adaptation of the overpasses of the Teruel – Sagunto section will be carried out by a consortium comprising Torrescámara and Compañía de Obras y Mantenimiento de Estaciones (Company for Works and Maintenance of Stations). The work on the overpasses of the Zaragoza – Teruel section will be carried out by a consortium formed by Asch Infraestructuras y Servicios and Dalawa Construcciones e Ingeniería.
As for the tunnels, the section of 15 of them will be widened and four false tunnels will be articulated. In those that exceed 100 m, rigid catenary will be installed. A total of 9 tunnels are located between Sagunto and Teruel and 10 on the Teruel – Zaragoza section.
The operations in the tunnels of the Teruel – Sagunto section will be carried out by the consortium of Acciona Construcción and Grupo Bertolín, while those of the Zaragoza – Teruel section will be carried out by the consortium of Contratas Vilor, Viuda de Sainz and Lurpelan Tunnelling.
The works awarded are included in the Master Plan for the modernisation of the Zaragoza – Teruel – Sagunto line, for which Adif has already mobilised EUR 500 million.
Zaragoza – Sagunto line is a strategic axis connecting the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors, and also links the port areas of Valencia and Bilbao and the logistics hubs of Platea (Teruel), Zaragoza-Plaza and Júndiz (Vitoria).
The awarded contract will contribute to reinforcement of interoperability and reliability, providing it with more capacity and contributing to increasing the speed of traffic.
The investment plan will especially boost freight traffic and its competitiveness, by allowing a greater load per axle and creating sidings for 750-metre trains. The electrification of the line will promote more sustainable mobility with an estimated annual saving of 5,000 tonnes of CO2 and 2.1 million litres of diesel. It will also adapt the parameters of this axis to high-performance standards, both national and international traffic.
