The European Investment Bank has under appraisal Košice tram network modernisation project, valuated at EUR 97 million. If approved, the EIB may provide EUR 9 million for project’s implementation.
The project consists of the design, construction and commissioning of the renewal and modernisation of the tracks and catenary infrastructure of the double tram lines of a total length of 7.9 km.
Under the project, the crossings and turning terminals will also be upgraded.
The renewed and modernised tramlines will, in conjunction with the already-procured new rolling stock, increase public transport passenger service reliability and comfort, supporting the modal split in favour of public transport.
This will support the decrease or limitation of congestion on the existing transport network and is thus expected to improve quality of life and access to the urban area.
In this summer, the city has completed the first part of the second stage of the tram line modernisation project. Eurovia SK was awarded the eight work packages in the second phase of work designed to upgrade the tramway system in Košice. With a value of EUR 80 million, the new contract follows on from the first phase of works, completed by Eurovia between April and October 2015 (for EUR 20 million).
The modernisation project launched in 2016 featured eight separate stretches as well as the reconstruction of platforms, information boards and traffic lights. The tramway network is more than 33 km long and includes 15 urban and outlying stations.
