European Investment Bank has under appraisal the funding of Raide-Jokeri LRT project in the cities of Helsinki and Espoo, Finland.
The total value of the project is EUR 460 million and the proposed EIB finance is EUR 200 million. The project involves the construction of the line and the acquisition of rolling stock.
In November 2016, the Executive Board of Helsinki City Transport decided to authorize Helsinki City Transport (HKL) to order from Transtech Oy 29 light-rail cars, each of them 35 metres long and operable in two directions, for the future Raide-Jokeri light-rail fleet.
Raide-Jokeri (rail Jokeri) will be an east-west light-rail line between Itäkeskus in eastern Helsinki and Keilaniemi in Espoo. The line will replace the current bus line 550 in the early 2020s. The light-rail line project is implemented jointly by Helsinki and Espoo. The planned length of the line is 25 km, of which 16 km will be in Helsinki and the remaining 9 km in neighbouring Espoo. The line will have 33 stops.
According to the projected purchase timetable for the LRT vehicles, HKL will first order one prototype rail car, which will run in the Helsinki inner-city rail network. The prototype rail car will be delivered and be in use by HKL at the turn of the year 2018–2019. According to the preliminary schedule, Raide-Jokeri could start operating in 2021.
