European Investment Bank considers a EUR 165 million loan for the construction of the first tramway line in the city of Tampere, Finland. The total value of the project is EUR 330 million and involves the construction of a line that will link the city centre with Sampola. From here, branches would continue to the University Hospital of Tampere and Hervanta.
In Aprilie 2015, the city shortlisted two consortia for the next bidding stage for the contract to design and build the tramway network. The shortlisted consortia are TRALLI – VR-Track Ltd, YIT Construction Ltd and Pöyry Finland Oy and Ratatek Ltd and TRALA – Lemminkäinen Infra Oy, Ramboll Finland Oy, Alstom Transport SA and A-Design Engineers Ltd.
The winner is expected to be announced in the next month and will work with the city council until August for the detailed design. After the presentation of the design, the involved parties will adopt the final decision on the construction of the first city’s tramway line.
At the middle of June 2014, the city administration decided to begin the design of the tram network. The network will include the construction of two lines with a route measuring 23.5 km, 33 stations, serving 48,000 passengers a day. The number of trams to serve the network is estimated at 26 units and the contract will include the supply of spares and maintenance and repair services. According to the project description, the estimated cost for the acquisition of trams is of around EUR 83 million and the price of a 30-m long tram would cost EUR 3.2 million, while one of 40 m, EUR 3.8 million.
The first line section (Hervanta-city centre) would be finalised in 2018-2019 and the entire project would be commissioned by 2022.
