The European Investment Bank has under appraisal the co-financing of Poznan-Szczecin railway modernisation project. The total cost of the project is EUR 880 million, and EIB proposed finance is EUR 250 million.
The project concerns the modernisation of 195 km between Poznan and Szczecin section of railway line E59, part of the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Baltic-Adriatic corridor.
The project, which is a continuation of the line works started several years ago in the southern sections, will upgrade the line to up to 160 km/h for passenger and 100-120 km/h for freight trains, modernise the energy supply and signalling systems. The objective is to increase the quality of rail services in view of encouraging travel by rail and thus enhance sustainable transport in Poland.
In 2016, PKP PLK said that the modernisation of Poznań – Szczecin was approved for CEF financing. The CEF financing announced two years ago had a total value of PLN 6.3 billion (EUR 1.47 billion) for 7 railway projects which were estimated at PLN 8.1 billion (EUR 1.9 billion).
Under CEF financing in 2014 it was allotted a EUR 407.5 million financing for the modernisation of Poznan Glowny – Szczecin Dabie section (part of E59 line), with a total cost of EUR 495.3 million. The project aims at removing a 118.7 km long bottleneck and thereby increasing capacity and service quality on the pre-identified rail section Szczecin- Poznan. The project should be completed by the end of 2020.
