EIB funds EMU procurement for Munich S-Bahn

S-Bahn Munich trainThe European Investment Bank has approved a EUR 800 million financial support for S-Bahn Munich train procurement.

The project has an estimated value of EUR 2.3 billion and covers the acquisition of 110 high – capacity electric multiple units for Munich S-Bahn to replace life-expired vehicles.

In October, DB Regio has launched a tender for the acquisition of up to 200 trains with an option for 90 vehicles. The contract also includes the provision of spare parts and special tools. The trains should be equipped with seats, systems and tools that will provide passengers high – level quality services and comfort and safety. The trains must be cost – effective and friendly – environmental.

The contract on train acquisition is scheduled to be signed in 2022 and to run until 2034. The first trains are expected to enter commercial services from December 2026.

Under the train project, each vehicle must have a length of around 200 metres, maximum 220 metres. They should be able to run to the newly city centre S-Bahn tunnel, expected to enter commercial operation in 2025.

DB Regio is operating S-Bahn services in Munich under a contract awarded by the Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG), the Bavarian Railway Company, in 2017. The contract involves the provision of passenger train services with the existing BR 423 and BR 420 trains and during the contract, some of the trains should be replaced.

The future S-Bahn Munich train fleet will complement the service improvements enabled by significant infrastructure works, in particular the enhancement of the tunnel through the city centre and the refurbishment of five sizeable stations. This will allow increasing the service frequency and train length. The new trains will support the ongoing public transport capacity extension programme.

The Munich S-Bahn network covers 530 km, making it one of the largest networks of the German S-Bahn service. The network connects the Bavarian state capital with the surrounding area and beyond. Two out of the 8 lines offer transport services between the city and Munich Airport at short intervals. Up to 840,000 passengers use the S – Bahn transport services in Munich and its metropolitan area.
