European Investment Bank has under appraisal a project of Tramwaje Śląskie, in Silesia Region, that involves the modernisation of tramway network and renewal of the fleet.
The total cost of the project is PLN 1 billion (EUR 231 million), of which the proposed EIB finance is PLN 330 million (EUR 76 million)
The project consists of several tram infrastructure construction and upgrading throughout Upper Silesia (Gorny Slask) region in Poland. The project envisages the construction of 4 new sections of tram lines (total line length of 9 km), the modernisation of 22 sections of existing tram lines (total line length of 60 km) and the acquisition of 45 new tram units. The new trams will operate on the new sections of tramway lines and to replace obsolete rolling stock.
The new sections of tramway lines will partly replace the existing bus services. A significant part of the project is expected to be funded by the EU (Cohesion Fund).
On February 17, 2017, Tramwaje Śląskie and TOR-KRAK signed the contract for the modernisation of tram line no.9. This is the first contract signed under the “Integrated project of modernization and development of infrastructure tram Agglomeration Silesian-Zagłębiowska along with the purchase of the tram” – Stage I. The contract is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.
