EIB approves funding for Sweden train procurement

Malab EMU The European Investment Bank has approved a SEK 700 million (EUR 69 million) financing for the procurement of Malab EMU fleet to provide regional and suburban rail services in the Stockholm – Mälaren region in Eastern Sweden.

SEK 1400 million (EUR 139 million) is the total cost of the project which covers the procurement of 12 new double-deck electric multiple units from Stadler.

In June 2020, AB Transitio ordered from Stadler 12 four – car electric trains under a CHF 133.3 million (EUR 120.3 million) contract. The trains were ordered on behalf of Mälab, a joint venture created by the transport authorities from Örebro, Stockholm, Sörmland and Västmanland counties.

This is an exercised option from an agreement signed in 2016 for the delivery of Malab EMU fleet comprising 33 trains to serve Sweden rail network, and 8 additional trains for Uppsala Länstrafik. The option included 110 additional trains. This EIB – financed Mälartåg double-decker train procurement represents the second call – off order, bringing Transitio’s rolling stock fleet to 53 Kiss electric trains.

The first Mälartåg train has been unveiled in 2018 at the Stockholm Central Station and entered public transport services in 2019 in Mälardalen region.

The train is able to run at a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The four-car double-deck trains have one class offering passengers comfortable large spaces. Double-walled car transitions, underfloor heating and good insulation help to make the trains particularly durable in winter. They are designed to run at minus 40 degrees and with a depth of 800 mm of snow on the track. Some examples of the design solutions incorporated to withstand the extreme weather conditions are  inter-carriage connections with twin bellows, large snow ploughs, efficient floor and wall  heating systems and specially adapted insulation.

The underframes of the trains have been designed to minimise freezing. Each train provides comfort-table seating for 333 passengers in adjustable seats with individual reading lights and dual power outlets, as well as seating for 24 passengers in tip-up seats. There is storage space to accommodate cabin size luggage under the seats. To increase comfort, the new trains have been built 120 mm wider and 100 mm higher than the Dosto trains that were previously delivered.

The new ordered trains which have are to be delivered until the end of 2021, are providing transport services on three rail routes:

(Uppsala) – Stockholm – Eskilstuna – Örebro, Stockholm –Katrineholm – Hallsberg,

Stockholm – Nyköping – Norrköping

Sala – Västerås –Eskilstuna – Linköping.
