Egyptian Railways awards EUR 1 billion contract

Egyptian National Railways (ENR) signed with Transmashholding-Hungary Kft., a Russian-Hungarian consortium a contract for the supply of 1,300 passenger cars. The total cost of the contract exceeds EUR 1 billion, which is Egyptian railways’ largest rolling stock contract.
The supply contract duration is 5 years since the date of its execution.
The cars will be developed according to TDA and requests of Egyptian rail operator. 5 types of cars will be produced and delivered of which 500 – 3 class cars with forced ventilation, 500 – 3 class cars with air conditioning, 180 – 2 class cars with air conditioning, 90 – 1 class cars with air conditioning and 30 – 2 class cars with air conditioning and cafeteria.
Tver Carriage Works, as part of the consortium, will become the key manufacturer of components and it will also be in charge with the transfer of technology and industrial organization. TMH Engineering will play the role of design authority responsible for project technical review. The Hungarian member of the consortium will be manufacturing and financial partner in the project. It is expected that half of awarded quantity will be manufactured at Hungarian facility Dunakeszi Jarmujavito Kft. in cooperation with TVZ, the rest of cars will be produced by TVZ on a stand-alone basis.
The project also anticipates the delivery of components and sub-assemblies for final car fitting at a car building plant, which will be created by TMH International AG in partnership with National Organization for Military Production in Egypt.
The contract was awarded following a bid called by ENR in 2017, where manufacturing companies from China, Italy, India and Romania participated.
