Dublin metro consultancy contract awarded

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) appointed Jacobs Engineering Group – Idom consortium as the employer’s designer for the development and implementation of Dublin metro system.

The Jacobs – Idom consortium will take the scheme from emerging preferred route status through evaluation and selection of preferred route, including all business case and environmental support work. It will then develop and promote the scheme railway orders, execute the planning process through An Bord Pleanála and attend the subsequent oral hearing. Pending a successful oral hearing, the consortium will also lead the development of the contracting and delivery strategy and the construction delivery partner engagement. The team will then continue to support TII and the National Transport Authority providing technical and commercial assurance throughout the construction delivery phase.

The new 19-km metro project envisages 11 km of tunnel through the city, with 10 below-ground stations and 5 above-ground stations. It will integrate other transport modes across the city to maximize user capacity and functionality.

In March, NTA and TII announced the details on the preferred route of MetroLink, which will run from Estuary north of Swords to Sandyford on the southside, serving Dublin Airport and the City Centre. The plans will also look to upgrade the existing LUAS green line to Sandford to increase capacity and fully integrate with the new metro.
By 2027, the new system, which will have a length of 26 km, should be operational, with a capacity of 30 trains per hour in each direction. The new line will have 25 stations, of which 15 stations will be constructed. According to the anticipated timeline, the contracts will be signed in 2020 and in 2021 construction works will be launched.
The project has an estimated value of EUR 3 billion.
