Dry Ports in Nigeria to be connected to railways

Nigeria-tren_1959681_futurerail_jpeg524d6882b9b35444e875c46968c2671eThe Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), together with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have supported the development of six inland container depots (ICD) through public-private partnership agreements with private developers. The ICD will be situated strategically throughout the country, in the following locations: Isiala-Ngwa (Aba), Erunmu (Ibadan), Zawachiki (Kano), Heipang (Jos) and CFS in Funtua (Katsina and Jauri Maiduguri). The aim of the ICD project is to decongest the seaports, particularly Lagos Port, while easing container movement and storage and facilitating trade between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Hassan Bello announced this week that the ICDs would be linked to the country’s railway to improve ease of movement of cargo.
„The railway lines that have been developed are also to be linked to the ICDs so that imported goods can get to Nigerians quickly without the stress of having to truck them all the way from Lagos, Port Harcourt or Warri,” he said.
