Dresden’s transport authority Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) and Bombardier Transportation signed a EUR 197 million contract for the supply of 30 Flexity trams. The contract, which includes maintenance services for 24 years, envisages an option for additional 10 vehicles and eight more years of servicing and maintenance. The new fleet will be delivered by the end of October 2023.
The Flexity trams will be equipped with the Obstacle Detection and Assistance System (ODAS) for preventing collisions.
The new trams are wider than the current rolling stock fleet and offer significantly greater comfort for passengers with 2+2 seating and large panorama windows. The capacity of the Flexity trams will be increased by 10%, being able to carry up to 290 passengers. To allow barrier-free access while using the existing infrastructure, only the portion of the car body which is above platform level is wider.
“We urgently need the new light rail vehicles, which provide larger capacity, in order to offer sufficient space for the rapidly growing number of our passengers,” Andreas Hemmersbach, DVB’s Board Member for Finance and Technology said.
