On 25 September, Qatar Rail has celebrated the completion of all tunnelling works on the Doha Metro project at Hamad International Airport station where the final 111th km was crossed by the TBM “Msheireb.”
The event was attended by HE the Prime Minister & Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani together with Minister of Transport and Communications, HE Jassim bin Saif al Sulaiti and HE Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, Minister of Municipality & Environment.
Qatar Rail has said that in order to achieve 100 percent of the tunneling, 470,497 concrete segments produced 70,071 tunnel rings to reach the 111 km of tunnels.
To accomplish this, Qatar Rail employed the use of 21 massive TBMs, the first of which arrived in the country in April 2014.
By the third of quarter of next year, the first train is scheduled to be delivered to Qatar Rail. And the metro is slated to open to passenger traffic in late 2019 or early 2020.
