SŽ, the rail infrastructure manager of the Czech Republic, announced a tender for the preparation of the documentation for zoning decisions (DÚR) for another high-speed section in Prague. The designer will prepare a technical proposal for the 8th section of the network, between Vršovice and Běchovice in Prague.
The section known as VRT Praha, will be connected by the already planned track in Polabí, which will also be used by trains in the direction of Pardubice, Hradec Králové or Wrocław in the future.
In addition to the DÚR, the contractor will also process the documentation for the environmental impact assessment (EIA), the digital model of VRT Praha in BIM standard and the design of track reliability and safety in accordance with the RAMS system (reliability, availability, maintainability and safety). The contract also includes the design of the fourth track between the Praha-Libeň – Praha-Běchovice stations and facilities for the maintenance of high-speed trains in Strašnice, a district in Prague.
The rail infrastructure manager has announced a procurement procedure based on the innovative best value method. Its principles are applied throughout the entire competition, including the evaluation of bids. The goal of this approach is to find a high-quality, independent and inventive supplier who can deal with the complex environment of urban development.
The VRT Praha will increase the capacity of the railway network in the capital and its metropolitan area and it will be designed as a two-track line equipped with the ETCS.
The speed of the trains in this section will vary between 160 and 240 km/h.
SŽ expects that the contractor will complete the documentation for the zoning decision in 2025, and construction works are scheduled to start in 2029.
The high-speed section in Prague is part of the future RS1 Prague – Brno – Ostrava route which will become the backbone of Czechia’s high speed rail system and will be the busiest route, connecting three largest cities in the country. In addition, the trains will also provide services to Jihlava, Olomouc and other regional centers. When complete, the high-speed railway between Prague and Brno will attract up to 60,000 passengers a day with trains running at a maximum speed of 320 km/h.
In January, SŽ signed the contracts for the design of the 20 km Moravian Gate high-speed section which also includes the DÚR. This section is also part of the RS1 and is planned to enter operation in 2028.
