The Portuguese consortium led by Ayesa, alongside Grid, was awarded a contract for design and environmental services for Porto Metro expansion by 2030.
The contract will see the consortium delivering the services for four new metro lines with a total length of 40 km which will be served by 38 stations.
Ayesa secured the contracts for the comprehensive design and environmental services for the four new metro lines strategically located in Porto, Gondomar, Trofa, Maia, and Matosinhos. These new lines will support growing populations, enhance public transport, ease congestion, and promote sustainable urban development for Porto’s thriving city.
In October 2023, Metro do Porto has announced the Expansion Plan 3.0 for metro e metroBus network covering the connections to Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto and Trofa. The company has launched an international public tender for the execution of preliminary projects and development of the respective environmental impact studies for the four new lines.
The new routes will enter operation in 2030 and will offer connections including Gondomar II (Dragão – Souto soute); Instituto Universitário da Maia (ISMAI) – Muro – Trofa; Sao Mamede (IPO-Sea Stadium); Maia II (Roberto Frias – Maia Park – Airport). Porto Metro expansion plan is estimated at EUR 1 billion.
The 6.9 km Gondomar line involves the construction of 8 new stations (São Roque, Cerco, Lagarteiro, Lagoa, Valbom, Hospital Fernando Pessoa, Oliveira Martins and Souto). The São Mamede line extends for 6.55 km and has 8 new stations (Senhora da Hora II, S. Gens, Xanana Gusmão, Elaine Sanceau, Pedra Verde, S. Mamede, ISCAP, IPO II). As regards the ISMAI – Muro – Trofa route, the solution found was a combination of metro, between the existing light rail station ISMAI and Muro, and metroBus, between Muro and Trofa. The line will be 10.22 km long and will be served by 7 stations (Ribela, Muro, Serra, Bougado, Pateiras, Trofa Sul and Paradela).
On the Maia II line, which stretches for 13 km, the construction of 16 new stations is planned (Os Verdes II, Ponte de Moreira, Espido, Parque Maia II, Chantre, Catassol, Maninho, Gueifães , Milheirós, Holy Waters, Caverneira, São Gemil, Broom, Pedrouços, HSJ II and Roberto Frias). In this case, it has not yet been defined whether the mode of transport will be the metro or the metroBus, something that, if the latter option is followed, assumes influence both on the number of kilometers, increasing from 13 km to 14.3 km, or in the number of stops, from 16 to 18.
The construction of new lines has a direct impact on road congestion relief. There are almost 17 thousand cars that will no longer be in circulation every day, in addition to 1,200 fewer bus trips, which will become unnecessary. Space and time are returned to people. For your enjoyment. For a better quality of life.
In June 2024, Metro do Porto has inaugurated the 3.1 km extension of the Yellow line between Santo Ovídio and Vila D’Este and is working on the expansion of Ruby Line between Casa da Música and São Bento.
In November 2023, Metro do Porto awarded a EUR 379.5 million contract for the construction of Ruby Line financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The contract was awarded to a consortium of Alberto Couto Alves (ACA), FCC Construcción and Contratas y Ventas.
The entire investment for Ruby Line is estimated at EUR 435 million and is expected to be competed by the end of 2026.
The Ruby Line will be 6.4 km long with 8 stations and includes the construction of a new bridge over Douro River between Massarelos/Campo Alegre area and Arrábida. The 835 -metre long bridge will be constructed 70 metres above the river. This bridge will be exclusively reserved for the Metro and pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
The Ruby Line will ensure important connections between strong demand centers, namely the Casa da Música Station, with 6 metro lines, the Campo Alegre University Center, the commercial areas and the Arrábida hospital, the historic area Gaia and nearby tourist areas, the Devesas CP Station and the Santo Ovídio modal interface, where in addition to the Yellow Line, a high speed train station will be built to serve the future Porto – Lisbon high-speed railway line.
