DB to offer free WLAN on all ICE trains by year-end

ICE-WLAN_wlan_1418027280-1024x576Deutsche Bahn CEO Ruediger Grube has confirmed that all ICE high-speed trains in Germany will be equipped with free WLAN access by the end of 2016. Connections will have limited volume and once this has been exceeded, the service will slow down.

Transport minister Alexander Dobrindt called on the federal states to ensure that there will be free WLAN on regional trains as well. He gave a “very clear sign” to the transport ministers of the various Federal States that this is a condition for tenders for regional transport. He aims to get free WLAN on all trains and at all stations. It is the federal states and the transport associations that determine the services, for which they receive government funding.

On 22 June, the federal government, Deutsche Bahn and the rail industry signed a joint strategy for the digitisation of the company, which includes Wi-Di but also new control and safety technology, research funding, automated driving and digital construction planning.
