Deutsche Bahn will invest EUR 30 million to gradually equip 1000 intercity cars with Wi-Fi connection.
The installation will start in summer and all identified cars will be equipped with necessary technology at the end of 2021.
“WLAN is high on the wish list of our customers. We are now fulfilling this wish in the Intercity services, investing EUR 30 million, ” Berthold Huber, DB Board Member for Passenger Transport, said.
In total, DB will equip around 1,000 intercity cars with the necessary technology. By 2020, 70 Intercity 2 double-decker trains will be fitted with the new technology and in 2021, all Intercity 1 trains will benefit Wi-Fi connection.

The so-called multi-provider technology, which already provides Wi-Fi in the ICE trains, will be used. This bundles the mobile data of all three major mobile network operators, which are available on the train higher fire widths than other means of transport.
The trains will be also equipped with information and entertainment system, which currently is available on all ICE trains. The system will be available in all Wi-Fi Intercity cars from early 2020.
