Deutsche Bahn will install additional switches and signals at Berlin Central Station, which will allow trains to reach the platforms more quickly and flexibly in the future.

During the construction work, which will take place between 17 February and 22 April 2025, four of the eight tracks in the underground station will remain available, while a complete closure of the underground station will be necessary on two weekends, from 21 to 24 March, and during the Easter holidays, from 18 to 22 April.
This project will have a swift impact on the reliability and punctuality of the north-south connection.
Berlin will continue to have good long-distance transport connections during the construction work. However, on the weekends of the full closures, long-distance trains will stop at other long-distance stations in Berlin, instead of Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Südkreuz. The Intercity service between Warnemünde and Dresden will stop at Berlin Ostkreuz from 18 February to 15 April. During the construction period, there will also be timetable adjustments in regional transport on the RE 3, RE 5, RB 14, and RB 23 lines, as well as on the FEX airport express.
Rail traffic at Berlin Central Station has increased steadily since it opened in 2006. One example is the new hourly high-speed connection between Berlin and Munich. Travellers also notice the increased traffic volume when, for example, access to the underground station is delayed due to tracks being occupied.
DB has been using the “Small and Medium Measures” (KMM) programme to renovate the infrastructure since 2022. The measures include additional crossing options, extra signals, track change operations, and new switches and platforms.
The programme aims to achieve quick, positive effects on quality and punctuality for both passengers and freight customers. These small and medium measures can be used to swiftly and effectively eliminate bottlenecks, make rail operations more flexible, and make the network more resilient. The 105th measure was put into operation in December 2024, with the implementation of over thirty additional measures planned for 2025.
