Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport announced that starting June 2020 DB Regio will operate Rheintal rail network, from Karlsruhe to Basle in Switzerland. Under the contract, DB Regio will provide transport services for 12.5 years from June 2020.
DB Regio has given the most economical offer for transport services. The costs of operation will be reduced from EUR 11.9 per km to EUR 7.3 per km.
The tender involved two lots, one for RE-Leistungen Karlsruhe – Offenburg – Basel route with initially approx. 2.1 million train kilometers per year and for RB-Leistungen Offenburg –Freiburg –Basel/Neuenburg route, with 1.9 million train-kilometers per year.
For the first lot, DB Region will operate double-deck trains from Siemens (Desiro HC) and for the lot 2, Mireo single-deck EMUs.
Overall, the offer in the first stage of operations from June 2020 will be expanded by 40%.
