DB Regio orders additional Desiro HC trains

Desiro HC trainsDB Regio ordered from Siemens Mobility a further six 5-car Desiro HC trains for the network Werdenfelser Land, Germany with the delivery of the trains scheduled for 2028.

The electric multiple units will be supplied with ETCS, and the order includes a spare parts supply package.

For the first time the Desiro HC trains will be equipped with ski holders. They will be put into operation on the Munich – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Mittenwald rail route.

This is already the third Desiro HC order by Deutsche Bahn and follows orders for the networks Franconia – South Thuringia and Danube – Isar.

From December 2023, DB Regio Bayern has introduced 18 new Desiro HC double-decker trains on the rail networks of Franconia and southern Thuringia region. The trains provide services at 30-minute intervals between Nuremberg and Bamberg, with over 10,000 more seats every day. Eight new trains are expected to be deployed from June 2024.  With a speed of up to 160 km/h, 380 seats, 36 parking spaces for bicycles, Wi-Fi, mobile phone-permeable windows and electronic passenger information with 27 monitors, the new Franconia-Thuringia Express from DB Regio Bayern offers a special driving experience for passengers.

DB Regio Bayern and the Bavarian Railway Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft – BEG), which plans, finances and controls regional and S-Bahn transport on behalf of the Free State of Bavaria, presented the new vehicles in October 2023.

The Free States of Bavaria and Thuringia are investing a total of EUR 320 million in expanding capacity with the new vehicle fleet. As part of this investment, in 2021, DB Regio Bayern ordered from Siemens Mobility 26 Desiro HC trains for Franconia – South Thuringia network.

The six-car Desiro HC double-decker trains that will be introduced from June 2024 will operate on the line RE 19 Nuremberg – Bamberg – Coburg – Erfurt/Sonneberg rail route. These will travel almost as fast as the ICE trains being specially equipped for use on the Bamberg – Coburg – Erfurt high-speed line. Since that route uses the high-speed Berlin – Munich line, the trains must meet special technical requirements and, for example, will be equipped with the most modern ETCS technology. They will travel at a maximum speed of 190 km/h.
