German rail infrastructure manager, DB Netz and Gleistechnik Süd, a division of Vossloh Rail Services, have signed a contract for delivery of ultrasonic equipment to perform the inspection of railways. The contract was signed for a period of three years and could be extended for another year.
Under the contract, the provider will supply the devices called RailRoadRunner. They are manually guided and used for the ultrasonic inspection of rail tracks. The contract also includes staff training for the personnel who will use the new devices.
The equipment will be used to inspect de tracks on short sections of railways, to identify the location of the flaws reported by rail inspection trains and to check points and crossings, as well as level crossings.
RailRoadRunner is fitted with a computer that resists to extreme meteorological conditions and the system inspection components are integrated into a light, carbon-made device. The equipment uses the 12 impulse-generating channels to record track flaws. The recorded data are permanently delivering information about the rail infrastructure condition at the time of inspection, while a tracking system connects the data to the localisation information.
