Czechia selects designer for Domažlice – German border rail

Domažlice – German border rail

The Czech rail infrastructure manager Správa železnic (SZ) selected Vectorama and Sudop Praha to design and develop the project documentation for the modernisation of Domažlice – German border rail.

CZK 43.8 million (EUR 1.8 million) was the bid submitted by the joint venture. The construction work is planned to take three years from 2027 and 2030.

The winners will prepare the project documentation for the authorisation of the entire project according to the new construction law.

The 10 km Domažlice – German border rail will be modernised to allow trains running at up to 115 km/h. The most significant change will take place at the Babylon stop, which will gain barrier-free access and elevated platforms allowing convenient boarding of the train. At the Česká Kubice station, the length of the tracks will be extended for the operation of freight trains up to 740 meters long. At all the four existing level crossings along the line, modern security and safety systems will be installed.

The project to modernise the line from Pilsen to Domažlice and on the state border with Germany includes both the construction of a completely new two-track connection from the regional capital to Stod, as well as the modernisation of the existing section from Pilsen through Nýřany to Chotěšov (in Plzeň-South District). Towards Domažlice, the track will be modernised and the second track will be constructed which will provide increased capacity and will allow trains operating at 200 km/h. The station in Domažlice will also undergo a complete reconstruction. Next year, work on both constructions starting in the regional capital should be the first to start.

The project for the modernisation of the line Pilsen – Domažlice – German border rail is co-financed by EU funds from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Under the third CEF call for proposals, SZ secured EUR 2.9 million to the upgrade of the signalling and remote-control system to EU technical standards and the deployment of ETCS Level 2 trackside and GSM-R on the Plzen – Nyrany – Chotesov railway section.

The main benefits of the project will be increased rail capacity, efficiency, interoperability, and safety on the TEN-T network in Czechia. For the modernisation of the line from Pilsen, via Domažlice, towards the border with Germany for the construction of the Plzeň (outside) – Nýřany – Chotěšov section, CEF will cover 85% of the eligible costs, with EUR 8.68 million the maximum amount of the subsidy, SZ says. The national funding is provided by the State Transport Infrastructure Fund.
