According to an announcement of Croatian Minister of Transport, Oleg Butković, the capital city Zagreb will have a rail link with Hungary by 2022. Also, Zagreb will have a new connection with Rijeka, a city on the Adriatic Sea coast. Projects have been announced as the Croatian Government plans to increase railway infrastructure investments.
Thus, after the finalisation of road transport projects, Croatia now wants to upgrade its railway network to increase the competitiveness of its railway transport system compared to other European countries.
The authorities are expected to announce a decision regarding the construction of a railway on Zagreb- Rijeka route crossing the plain area.
Minister Butković emphasised that without this new railway connection, the Port of Rijeka would not be capable to sustain a “strong development”.
Earlier this year, Croatia and Serbia signed an agreement to upgrade the 300-km long Zagreb-Belgrade railway. Croatia has already completed several sections on its territory and prepares to get financing to complete Dugo Selo-Novska and Okučani – Vinkovci railway sections.
Further on, Minister Butković added that the most important and strongest financing source for Croatia is European funding, but the concession model for rail infrastructure projects could not be ignored when targeting the acceleration of an efficient railway network.
