The Polish Central Communication Port (CPK) company has initiated a procedure to conduct additional technical assessments of buildings situated above the planned High-Speed Rail tunnel in Łódź. Scheduled for construction in 2026, the analyses aim to ensure the safety of residents near the project site.
The contract includes evaluating the technical condition of 70 buildings, including multi-storey residential and commercial properties. The selected contractor will:
- Perform detailed diagnostic procedures to identify the current state and any existing damage to the buildings.
- Forecast the potential impact of tunnel construction on the structures.
- Provide comprehensive recommendations for securing and repairing buildings or implementing remedial measures to prevent further damage.
The contractor’s findings may also include proposals to improve the condition of the properties, with consideration for conservation requirements.
The task is expected to be completed within six months of the contract’s conclusion. CPK is accepting offers until January 27, 2025.
Importance of the Łódź tunnel and safety measures
The High-Speed Rail tunnel is a critical component of the “Y” line, a planned route connecting Warsaw, CPK, Łódź, Wrocław, and Poznań. It will traverse the center of Łódź, running beneath densely developed urban areas.
The entire section of line 85 between Warsaw and Łódź is scheduled to be operational by 2032, coinciding with the opening of the new national airport. Once completed, the train journey between the two cities will be reduced to approximately 40 minutes. This investment represents a crucial step in realising the “100 Minutes Poland” rail project, which aims to improve connections and address transport exclusion across Poland.
During the design phase, preliminary assessments of the buildings’ technical condition were conducted. The current initiative aims to expand on these earlier evaluations to address any potential risks comprehensively.
The tunnel’s design documentation outlines necessary geotechnical reinforcements and structural protections to safeguard buildings in the impact zone. Each location will be evaluated individually, with specific technical solutions developed based on the contractor’s expertise and recommendations.
CPK has emphasized that protections for tenement buildings above the tunnel will be implemented under the direct supervision of the project’s investors. The approach ensures tailored solutions for each property, prioritizing safety and structural integrity.
This initiative underscores CPK’s commitment to minimizing the project’s impact on local communities while advancing Poland’s High-Speed Rail network.
