Infraestruturas de Portugal awarded a consortium comprising DST and Azvi a EUR 55.3 million contract for the modernisation of Espinho – Vila Nova de Gaia rail section, on the Northern Line.
The works, which will be completed within two years, envisages the modernisation of 14.2 km section with the objective of increasing the capacity of freight transport, safety and flexibility of operation.
The project also includes the modernisation of Granja and Vila Nova de Gaia stations and access improvement of all existing stops and stations, the replacement of an 8 km catenary as well as the elimination of level crossings along the section.
The contract is part of the second phase of Northern Line modernisation on Ovar – Gaia section, with a total value of EUR 159 million. The Cohesion Fund is covering 85% of the project’s costs. In 2019, the EC has announced a EUR 119 million funding for the Ovar – Gaia rail section.
