Contract signed for the Landshut-Plattling railway expansion

The plans for the expansion of the Landshut-Plattling railway line for local transport are making further progress: Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter and Bavaria’s railway boss Heiko Büttner signed the planning contract for the design and approval planning in Wallersdorf today.

“The Free State is voluntarily investing a further EUR 21.6 million  to make train traffic from Munich to Lower Bavaria more attractive. We want to increase punctuality and introduce a half-hourly service,” emphasized Bernreiter. The expansion package complements the plans for more efficient freight transport that the federal government has commissioned as part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan project.

In autumn 2022, the Free State had already commissioned Deutsche Bahn (DB) to carry out preliminary planning for the expansion of local transport for EUR 1.5 million. DB completed this within the agreed time and cost framework. The Free State subsequently also commissioned the planning of a barrier-free central platform in Landau, as the federal government is only financing the platform underpass there.

“For more punctual trains and a significantly more attractive service for our passengers, we need projects such as the expansion and modernization of the route between Landshut and Plattling in the spirit of the Strong Rail initiative. The expansion for local transport is an ideal complement to the federal government’s expansion project. The goal is an efficient rail infrastructure in Lower Bavaria. In concrete terms, this means attractive transport options for commuters, sustainable and climate-friendly mobility options for tourism and the shift of freight transport to rail. Together with our partners, the Free State and the Federal Government, we are working to offer people a better railway,” said Heiko Büttner, Deutsche Bahn’s Group Representative for the Free State of Bavaria.

The design and approval planning with the associated building permit procedure is to be completed by DB InfraGO AG by 2029. The planning package for the expansion of local transport, financed by the Free State, has the following scope:

  • double-track expansion of the approximately seven-kilometer-long section of track between Wörth and Loiching, so that trains can meet each other during the journey and no longer have to wait for delayed oncoming trains in Wörth or Loiching;
  • Increasing the maximum speed to up to 160 km/h in order to reach the time slots and connecting trains provided for in the Deutschlandtakt in Landshut and Plattling;
  • Adaptation of the signals and construction of a level platform access at Wallersdorf station so that trains can pass each other more quickly there;
  • Construction of a new central platform in Landau to ensure accessibility and
  • Construction of additional signals between Dingolfing and Schwaigen so that trains can run there at shorter intervals.

At the same time, the expansion plans for the project included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 in 2018 are continuing. It includes measures for rail freight transport, such as a bypass curve for Plattling station and the construction of seven meeting points for long freight trains. The control and safety technology will also be partially adapted and renewed. The expansion measures for local passenger transport are to be implemented in the early 2030s.

The railway expansion between Landshut and Plattling is part of the MACH2 program for more double tracks and passing stations in the Bavarian rail network, which the Free State launched two years ago. Further information on the expansion of the Landshut – Plattling railway line can be found on the DB website at www.landshut-plattling.de can be accessed.

As soon as the timetable changes on December 15, 2024, there will be extensive improvements in regional transport from Munich via Landshut and Plattling to Passau. DB Regio AG will then use brand new vehicles with higher capacity, WiFi on the train and power sockets at all seats, as ordered by the Free State. The evening intervals will be closed so that there will be an hourly service until after 11 p.m.
