The Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the contract signing ceremony for the first section of Athens Metro Line 4, country’s largest public project worth EUR 1.2 billion which received European funding.
The contract was signed by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, the CEO of Attiko Metro, Nikolaos Kouretas, and the CEO of the Avax Group, Konstantinos Mitzalis.
In 2020, Attiko Metro announced that the consortium comprising Avax, Ghella and Alstom won the contract for the construction of the first section. The works are expected to be start this summer and will be completed within 8 years.
The line “will serve almost 400,000 of our citizens. It will cover the most densely populated areas of the basin. It will add value to properties in these areas. It will give access to the Metro in emblematic areas, such as the University Campus, the very center of Athens. Line 4, as well as the future extensions that are being launched, will offer safe and environmentally friendly transport,” the Prime Minister said.
The first section (Section A) covers the construction of 12.8 km of metro line and 15 stations linking Alsos Veikou and Goudi and crossing four municipalities. By the construction of the first section, the entire metro network will be decongested due to the increasing passenger demand particularly at the Syntagma station, which is an interchange to the Line 3 with Line 2.
According to Attiko Metro, EUR 1.5 billion is the budget of the project which is part of the National Strategic Reference Framework 2014 – 2020 and in the Business Plan “Infrastructure, Transport, Environment and Sustainable Growth”.
The four stations (Exarcheia, Akadimia (Academy), Kolonaki and Evangelismos) of the Alsos Veikou – Goudi metro section will be constructed within the Athens Basin and particularly the center of Athens.
This section will extend the metro network from the Veikos Grove in Galatsi to Goudi, within the Municipalities of Athens, Galatsi, Kaisariani and Zografou.
“Line 4 will change the transport map of the city and the mobility of thousands of our citizens. And of course, it is a new generation project, modern, environmentally friendly, which expands the underground railway network of the Capital,” the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport said.
As part of the project, a new Operation Control Center for Line 4 will also be constructed, which will also integrate the controlling the operation of the Lines 1, 2, 3, as well as future new lines and the tram system. A new maintenance and repair facility will be also constructed at Sepolia depot.
The project also includes the procurement of 20 fully automated, four-car Metropolis trains manufactured by Alstom which, as part of the contract will also deliver the Urbalis 400 CBTC driverless technology, Iconis security and control systems and the Hesop energy saving system.
The project will have a significant environmental footprint eliminating the number of cars by 53,000 per day which will reduce the CO2 emissions by 318 tonnes per day.
Athens Metro Line 4 will be constructed in five sections with a total length of 38.4 km and 35 stations.
