The Egis – CID consortium was awarded a contract to develop the study on the extension of Rabat LRT network to Salé airport and Témara conurbation in Morocco. The preliminary study and preliminary design will be completed within 12 months.
The LRT extensions to the eastern and southern areas of the city will have a total length of 30 km, connecting the railway stations in Rabat city with those of Rabat Agdal and Témara, along with the Rabat-Salé airport and the new Technopolis district.
These extensions will require a general overhaul of the network.
Under the contract, Egis will be responsible for project coordination, urban integration, systems and operation, and CID will be tasked with data acquisition, traffic and ridership studies, geotechnical surveys and engineering structures.
In January 2019, the local authorities approved the LRT extension project to Temara, 15 km south of Rabat, and to Sale Al Jadida, 10 km east of Rabat. USD 472 million is the estimated value of the project.
Between 2005 and 2011, the consortium was responsible for the the design and construction of the first two light rail lines in totaling 19 km, connecting the sister cities of Rabat and Salé.
This year the 2.4 km extension with 4 stops of Line 2 in Rabat was opened, providing the connection to the Yacoub Al Mansour neighborhood.
