Contract awarded for Madrid Cercanías line modernisation

Cercedilla – Cotos railway Spain’s rail infrastructure manager Adif has awarded the contract for comprehensive renewal of Cercedilla – Cotos railway, integrated into the Madrid Cercanías network to improve the reliability of the rail service and reduce travel times in the city’s metropolitan area. The EUR 14.9 million contract has been signed with a joint venture of ASCH Infraestructuras y Servicios and Cycasa Canteras y Construcciones, which will have to completed all works in 12 months.

The rehabilitation project includes the renewal of the superstructure – rail, sleepers and ballast – on the track, as well as the treatment of trenches at various points, the development of the existing walls and the execution of new retaining walls in selected sections and the replacement of asphalt level crossings and crossings between platforms, among other actions.

Along with the comprehensive renovation of the track, works will be carried out at stations and stops on the line.The project maintains the current layout, with some modifications to optimise the maximum speeds of the line and reduce travel times.

At the existing Cercedilla, Puerto de Navacerrada and Cotos train stations, the reconfiguration of the track platforms is also planned in accordance with the operating needs, as well as the replacement of sleepers, rail and ballast and the renewal of the track devices. Work will also be carried out on platforms, including the edge of the platform and tactile tile, as well as the access ramps, to adapt them to the new rolling stock.The actions planned at the stations also include the facilities at the platforms such as the gutters and pipelines, manholes and track crossings.

Adif also plans to revive the unutilised Camorritos and Siete Picos stops. At Camorritos stop, the first platform will be remodeled to adapt it to the new trains and the platform 2 will be demolished. The Siete Picos stop, the platform will have a new track configuration to allow the crossing of trains and thus improve the operation of the trains. The Cercedilla Pueblo and Eras-Los Castaños stops will be demolished.

The rehabilitation of the line also includes actions in the Navacerrada tunnel, including the improvement of infrastructure and the renewal of security facilities.

This global project includes the comprehensive renovation of the catenary and signalling systems, actions that have already been put out to tender for EUR 23.8 million.

The rehabilitation of the 18.2 km metric gauge Cercedilla – Cotos railway is part of the comprehensive improvement plan for Madrid Cercanías network and services.
