Afghanistan Railway Authority announced that the construction works on the railway link to Tajikistan are scheduled to begin by the end of this year, as the design of the project is completed.
The Afghanistan Railway Authority and Tajikistan Railway signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the railway sector. Under the agreement, it will be constructed a railway bridge over Panj River and a railway station in Sher Khan Bandar, a border town near the Panj River, at the border with Tajikistan.
The line would start at Kolkhozabad in Tajikistan, running 50 km south to the countries’ border point in Nizhny Panj, crossing over the Panj River to the port of Sher Khan Bandar, in Afghanistan. There are plans for a 65-km extension to Kunduz (Afghanistan) and from here, to Mazar-i-Sharif (in the west), which will form Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Tajikistan railway corridor.
As part of this corridor, in November 2016, the first station on the Afghan side of the Turkmen border opened. An 85-kilometer rail line has been constructed in Turkmenistan in the first stage. The corridor’s project also envisaged the construction including rehabilitation works on Tejan-Sarakhs-Mashhad (300 km), Turkmenabat-Atamyrat (215 km), Ashgabat-Karakum-Dashoguz (530 km) railways, more than 40 new railway bridges and two bridges through the Amu Darya river.
