Colas-Alstom consortium wins Paris metro Line 17 contract

Paris metro Line 17Société du Grand Paris has awarded Colas Rail – Alstom consortium a contract to supply and lay 10 km of track, rigid overhead catenary system and linear equipment for the 2nd section of Paris metro Line 17.

The consortium will be responsible for the 3 km section between Le Bourget Aéroport and Parc des Expositions, located before Roissy. The work will take place in a tunnel in embankments and on a viaduct over 3 km.

The first works will start by mid-2024 with the project involving 200 employees.

The Grand Paris Express Line 17 will have a length of 26.5 km crossing 13 municipalities and linking 9 stations between Saint-Denis Pleyel and Le Mesnil-Amelot in less than 25 minutes. The line will provide fast and comfortable journeys for nearly 565,000 inhabitants.

The Paris metro Line 17 is divided into two sections: the 6 km south section between Saint-Denis Pleyel and Le Bourget-RER with a common track with Line 16 and the 20.5 km north section which includes a 5.5 km viaduct near Mesnil-Amelot. The line will provide connections with metro lines 14, 15 and 15, RER B and D routes, tram lines 1 and T11 Express, as well as to TGV services and airport.

The two companies have also worked together for the Grand Paris Express project under a contract covering the supply and installation of the track and overhead catenary and linear equipment on line 15 South-East section.

The consortium pays particular attention to environmental and social impacts. It has committed to limiting its greenhouse gas emissions by supplying low-carbon concrete made from cement produced by reducing energy consumption, and rolled rails made from steel produced from a low energy-consumption process.

Other initiatives have been implemented such as the use of electric vehicles, the use of LEDs for tunnel lighting, the treatment of rainwater and the establishment of a treatment and recycling station for residues from the tracks concrete.

To promote access to employment, the site will facilitate access to training for young people through apprenticeship contracts, work-study programmes and internships at all levels (training for workers, supervisors and engineers). A significant volume of labour hours will be reserved to people on long term unemployment to promote professional inclusion on site.
