China’s National Development and Reform Commission has approved the construction of three new rail lines in the central and southwestern regions. The projects are estimated at a total of CNY 142.77 billion (USD 22 billion). The construction of the three railroads is expected to be completed in the next 4-6 years.
One of the projects concerns a new high-speed railway, which will link cities in Henan and Hubei provinces and Chongqing municipality. Investment into the Zhengzhou-Wanzhou high-speed rail line is estimated at CNY 118 billion (USD 18.5 billion). With a designed speed of 350 km, the 818-km railway is expected to carry 60 million passengers per year.
The two other tracks will be standard rail lines and will help improve transportation in Yunnan, a southwest border area.
Local governments and China Railway Corporation will provide the majority of the funds, while the rest will come from commercial and policy banks.
