Chiltern Railways are looking for a small group of volunteers to pilot an innovative new approach to rail travel that could remove the need for customers to carry rail tickets. The project forms part of Arriva’s Digital Train Programme which focuses on four primary areas, connectivity, seamless customer journey, content and analytics.
The pilot will be IOS based and conducted on the Chiltern Railways route between Oxford Parkway, Bicester Village, Bicester North and London Marylebone.
The new app-based concept will allow passengers to use just their smartphones to detect commencement of travel. The solution will make use of Bluetooth for opening ticket gates, automatically charging the customer the best price for their journey at the end of the day. At ungated stations geo-location tools are used to locate the customer and the trains travelled on. In addition, the app will also offer personalised, real-time travel updates, history of journeys, prices and how the best value fare has been calculated.
