Romanian Rail Infrastructure Manager, CFR SA, completed the rehabilitation program of four railway bridges located between Constanța – Agigea Nord and Costinești Tabără – Neptun. The total investment amounts to RON 8.2 million (EUR 6.3 million) and was financed from EU funds and the State budget. With the rehabilitation works for the infrastructure and superstructure of the bridges CFR SA aims to improve the security, comfort and to increase the train speed from 40 km/h to 80 km/h; also CFR SA aims to increase the railway capacity to 21,5 axle/load.
In 2016, CFR SA runs 400 projects on the railway network, a portfolio of works divided into strategic directions for the rehabilitation of infrastructure and superstructure on the Pan-European Corridor IV and for the rest of the network CFR SA targets the improvement of the operating capacity, the transport quality and to increase the safety of rail traffic.
The investments allocated by CFR SA for these projects amount to around RON 22 billion (EUR 4.7 billion) and they are financially supported from foreign funds, the State budget and CFR SA own resources.
In the first half of 2016, CFR SA completed six large investment projects, totaling RON 1.32 billion (EUR 297 million), relaunched 58 works projects financed from external funds and the State budget amounting to RON 12.61 billion (EUR 2.8 billion). Also, CFR SA prioritized 336 investment projects and current overhauls, funded from own sources.
The investment plan issued by the Romanian infrastructure manager for the 400 projects, aims at transforming the national rail network development in five major areas:
– modernization of railway sections included on the northern and southern Corridor IV (construction of embankments and superstructure for maximum speeds of 160 km / h, construction of tunnels, new bridges, modernization of platforms, canopies, upgrading the power supply systems and the electronic signaling systems, implementation of ERTMS level 2 and GSM-R)
– modernization of railway stations
– extending the implementation of ETCS Level 2 / ERTMS
– rehabilitation of bridges, culverts and railway tunnels
– increase of rail safety
The most important targets completed by CFR SA in 2016 with external funding and co-funding by the State budget are: the rehabilitation of Frontieră – Curtici – Arad – Km 614 rail section (41.185 km double track for train speeds of 160 km / h, modernization of Arad railway station, the most modern station in Romania, opening the biggest Control Centre for Railway Traffic Management which allows a 25% increase of traffic capacity in railway stations, commissioning of new electronic interlocking stations and ERTMS system at Glogovăţ, Şofronea, Arad and Curtici railway stations), the implementation of ERTMS / ETCS level 2 pilot project (signaling systems ) on the Bucharest – Brasov rail section, at Buftea, Periș, Crivina stations, modernization of Pitești, Slatina, Râmnicu Vâlcea railway stations and Resița Nord, the construction of the new road bridge on 14 National Road and the rehabilitation of two bridges and two culverts in Constanța.
“By maintaining a steady pace in the development of the railway network, a key aspect of the Romanian economy, CFR SA will manage to bring the rail among the best choices of passengers by increasing rail safety and reduced rail journeys and, at the same time, it will directly support the increase the trade between economic entities through better connectivity between the rail networks at the border with neighboring countries,” Marius Chiper, general manager of CFR SA said.
